Candidate Background Information: Susan Dineen, Southern Shores 1. Name Susan Dineen 2. Educational Background: BA in Political Science from Kean University, Union , New Jersey 3. Worked at New Jersey Bell which merged into Bell Atlantic which then merged into Verizon, for thirty years. During that time I was Facilities and Equipment Engineer. After retirement I consulted for Verizon under the title of Assistant Manager handling the DSL requirements and coordination of service for the State of Virginia. This capacity gave me experience in facilitating and running weekly meetings with Engineering Staff, Craft Supervisors and Technicians to determine how best to implement DSl service for demand areas in a timely manner. The criteria for these meetings were based on my research data, and guidelines given me as to how to direct activities. I also had daily interaction with our technicians to assist in giving them directions and clarification. The reviews I received over a thirty year period, done on a yearly basis, were consistently outstanding. 4. Owner of a single family dwelling in Southern Shores. 5. Community involvement and offices held are as follows. Treasurer for the Dare County Republican Women and a Member at Large for the Dare County Republican Party. A co-chair for the Southern Shores Precinct and acted as a Dare County and N.C. State Delegate for the Republican Conventions. Secretary of the Dare County Republican Convention in 2013 Teacher of CCD, religious education, for many years, an assistant Girl Scout Leader, and an active Member of Dare Squares. 6. What motivated me to run for the election to Mayor of Southern Shores was the feeling that the town could use an infusion of new blood. My only special interest group would be the people of Southern Shores. We are living in difficult economic times and I feel that although it won’t be easy to reverse the established spending we must take a stand and hold the line. If the people are expected to tighten their belts I believe we should expect no less from our government. My ideology lends me to a conservative approach on all issues. Every concern no matter how trivial should be addressed by the board and a common sense non biased approach should be reflected in the determination of all outcomes. My passion is a desire to root out the truth by arming myself with as much information as possible so that fair and just conclusions can be reached. All issues should be thoroughly evaluated and reviewed before a voted on unanimous decision is arrived at. 7. I am a good listener and use discernment and common sense in all aspects of my life. I love interacting with people and have many years of experience dealing with all types of personalities and situations. I love to research; my belief being one can never have enough knowledge. I pride myself in being fair and level headed. I love my town and my country and I want to serve them both. 8. Real Estate and Home Building are the heart of the Outer Banks. We need a robust community with ingenuity and design. Southern Shores should be a place that provides opportunities for home builders and profit for Real Estate investors. We want to grow our community in a way that is pleasing to the citizens and friendly to the environment. The people deserve to live in a place that welcomes vacationers and also offers wide appeal to future residents. 9. The current Mayor of Southern Shores, Hal Denny, has kept the ball rolling on the paving of our local streets and completing dredging of the canals. I desire to make sure that these jobs are carried out to completion. 10. In order to allow an objective, scientifically sound, ecological adjustment of future beach nourishments, research should aim at taking into account the full sandy beach ecosystem; avoid strategic imperfections in experimental design and making the biological processes behind impact and recovery of all ecosystem components understood. We should consider soft structural stabilization techniques which include beach nourishment, beach bulldozing (beach scraping), dune creation (including sea grass planting), restoration, and reshaping. In other words beach manipulation. We need to work with the Commissioners and get funding for these projects from the Shoreline Management Fund and use the occupancy tax avenue as a revenue stream. 11. There are enough building regulations in place at the current time and no need to add further red tape and regulations to an already cumbersome process of building in this area. If individuals want to improve and fortify their homes beyond the regulations they should be applauded and encouraged to do so but it should be up to the individual home owners to make these decisions. 12. Costs for homeowners are out of hand and if these costs keep going up they will discourage new investment in the area and cause people to leave. We need to look into any and all options to save money. We need to do everything in our power to keep property taxes low, we need to tighten the belt and live within our means. 13. Wind turbines are loud, endanger our bird species and negatively impact the aesthetics of the area. More research on the long term effects should be considered in depth before jumping on this band wagon. Alternative clean energy should be a top priority but we should always look long and hard before we leap. 14. The town of Southern Shores has no need for additional property. We presently have a nice balance of preserved areas versus developed areas. 15.. Each municipality should do what is best for their town and if the County Commissioners don’t feel the present formula is working out fairly then they should confer with the leadership of the towns to determine a viable solution.
