Carl Sagan said (in a re-aired interview yesterday) that the root of all evil is lack of critical thinking. I agree. I think that greed and avarice follow it. The U.S. childhood poverty rate is 2nd to Romanias (among the wealthiest nations), our children are slipping behind the rest of the world in math and science, and the gap between the rich and the poor has never been wider in modern times, with the richest 10% owning 85% of the wealth (which leaves just 15% of the wealth for that other 90%). Critical thinking is antithetical to our corrupt, crony capitalist system, and we shouldnt expect to have increased income equality and smarter, more critically thinking, more enlightened people under it. Critical thinking is the greatest threat to the ruling class.
