Left us on this day (Jan. 24) in 1970: doo wop singer James Shep Sheppard (injuries sustained in a robbery, age 34), best remembered as lead singer of The Heartbeats (1957 US #53 A Thousand Miles Away) & later, Shep & The Limelites - formed in Queens, New York in 1960, they scored the 1961 US #2 Pop hit Daddys Home (which James co-wrote); the instantly recognizable song was covered by many over the years, including P J Proby (1970) Jermaine Jackson (1972), Toots & The Maytals (1973) & Cliff Richard (1981); later songs were not as successful but still sold well, among them What Did Daddy Do, Ready For Your Love & Our Anniversary; The Limelites disbanded in 1966 but were reformed by James a couple of years later…
