Carlos Vulgamott is racing the Breck Epic fresh off a win at the Breck 100. Stay tuned for updates on an incredible race. Weapon of choice: Spot Brand Cream. Good evening my friends! What a great start to the day. The weather was awesome and the racing was a head to head battle the whole way. Three of the singlespeeders made it made it up the Boreas Pass climb with the lead group and into the singletrack. It was Dax Massey, Dan Durland, and me dropping into the Aspen Alley singletrack altogether. Dax and I dropped Dan about three miles in and then Dax and I pushed each other for the next 20 miles. Unfortunately on the last significant climb of the stage (Little French), which is a rock garden with lots of sharp rocks, I ended up with a sidewall tear. My heart hit the floor and I started to panic and then I calmed myself down. I got off my bike and started the tire change and then realized I didn’t have anything to cover the tear!?! I then remembered, I have a plastic bag that I carry my tools in and so I used that to cover the tear and pumped up the tire. Like I said before the competition is intense and within two minutes of my tire change I had three singlespeeders pass me as I was working on my tire. I had a little chuckle inside after I got on my bike because I went from battling for the win to damage control mode. I pushed hard to close the gap and catch as many guys as possible and within the last three miles I closed the gap on fourth place Jason Hilgers but could not close the gap. So I ended up finishing fifth place and 12 minutes back off of Dax, the current race leader, 7 minutes out of second, and 5 minutes outside of third place for the overall. Tomorrow’s stage is Colorado Trail and is 38 miles with 5312 feet of climbing.
