Carmelo Anthony is a better rebounder, scorer, shooter, Lebron is a better passer and defender. You can say all you want about Carmelos defense and how defense wins games, that is not fully true. Defense may be the main cause, but it can not stand alone. Every great defensive team needs some offensive decent offensive ability, look at the Bulls, they could have done much better if they had a better scoring option. Finally, Lebron has not experienced the pressure that Carmelo Anthony experiences. Playing in New York is much harder to play in than Miami, also James plays with the big three. Also it is a fact that when star players play together, they play better.
