Carnarvon Speedway Club hosted the WA Modified Drivers Association Grand Final last weekend. Two big nights of racing saw 8 visiting Modified competitors race for the 2013/14 Series title and Carnarvon Speedway Club Modified Perpetual. The local divisions supported the event, with good numbers in most fields. Rain threatened on Friday night, only to dampen the track with racing to continue. Unfortunately the rain scared most spectators as it was a quiet night around the track. On the track was another story, with racing fierce and fast. The Modifieds were not only competing for their series championship but also the Shire of Carnarvon Modified Perpetual 2014. Light rain late in the afternoon made the racetrack a little wet for competitors with the opening heat race of the night a pretty tough affair. Veteran John Purser drove a smart race from the front row to win heat one over a fast finishing Matt Noakes and Kye Blight. Heat two would be the race of the opening night with Kye Blight and Aydan Trewern battling for the entire race after sharing the front row. Trewern narrowly defeated Blight in race that had the crowd on their feet with the points battle for the GWN7 WA Modified Sedans Series grand final coming down to the wire between the duo. The final heat race of night one saw Jason Pearce and Clint Noakes have a great tussle in the opening laps before Pearce opened up a gap. Blight found a way past Noakes late in the race before attempting to run down leader. Pearce would be equal to the challenge narrowly defeating Blight, Noakes and Trewern. Night two was great competition with only 28 points separating Blight and Trewern for the series championships. Heat 4 had a fastest lap time of 17.983 by Clint Noakes, with his brother, Matt Noakes, winning the race, followed closely by Blight and Trewern. In the final heat, Jason Pearce won impressively with a fastest lap time of 17.777. Second place went to Trewern and third to Clint Noakes. The Final was actioned packed, with 6 cars finishing the race. Blight retired early into the 20 lap feature race, slowing due to mechanical problems. Calon Ball and Matt Noakes were unable to start the feature. Pearce won on his favourite track taking the perpetual trophy back home. Second went to Trewern and third to Clint Noakes. A big thankyou to the visiting drivers and the WAMDA crew who always support us and put on a fantastic show. In the Street Stock Division, Jace Kempton took the first win on Friday night however didn’t finish the night due to car troubles. He managed to get his car back on track for Saturday night only to suffer more issues with his car. Damon Lyall was fast all weekend and Barry Mason borrowed his son’s car to take out his first win this season on the first night. Lance Root held minor placing’s on Friday only to blow his engine and not be able to compete the following night. The Andreoli brothers came out competitive and fast, both showing great potential. We also welcome back Daniel Pidala on the second night of racing, his first appearance this season. The Sprintcar division was strong once again in the lead up to the Northwest Championships. Starting with six sprinters, Burke Holla put on some great racing along with the Bumbak brothers and Jim Andreoli. Graham Carger came back to the track Friday night. Andreoli held the fastest time of 13.278 seconds in heat 5. The sprintcar division is expecting sixteen competitors this coming weekend for the Northwest Championships. Juniors once again saw the three locals get some valued points. Luke Munro made an impressive comeback after car problems in his first meeting. Munro showed pace, placing second and two thirds. The crowd held their breathes as Shianne Pidala and Munro rubbed panels in the final heat, last lap, sending Pidala in a bit of a tizz only to save herself from hitting the wall. Fantastic racing from the juniors who are improving every meeting. Our next meeting is another big one with the Northwest Championships. Sixteen visiting sprintcars are rumoured to be competing at the track- don’t miss it! Catch Ya on Clay.
