Carter, Rachel posted 24 hours ago March 30th, 2014 Print Create a hardcopy of this page Font Size: Default font size Larger font size Carter, Rachel Rachel Carter NEWTON Rachel Gabriel Carter, 89, of Newton, died Friday, March 28, 2014, at Abernethy Laurels, surrounded by her children and family. She was born March 11, 1925, to Robert Connel Gabriel and Era Alley Gabriel (deceased), of Sherrills Ford. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers, Neil Gabriel, Owen Gabriel and Tate Troutman and sisters, Janis Gabriel, Carolyn Gabriel, Lois Gabriel and Pauline Angel. She graduated from Sherrills Ford High School and Clevenger Business College. Rachels career as a secretary began during World War II, where she worked in the war room of the Pentagon. She retired from Carolina Mills after 27 years as an executive secretary. Mrs. Carter (also lovingly known as MaMaw) delighted in collecting and selling antiques, traveling with her husband, family and friends and spending time at her mountain cabin. A faithful servant of Christ, she attended First United Methodist Church of Newton, where she served in the United Methodist Women and many other areas. She also belonged to the Newton Pilot Club and Business and Professional Womens Club. In 1947, Rachel married the love of her life, William E. Ed Carter. They were married for 60 years until his death May 17, 2007. Their love and devotion to each other was an example of a true Christian marriage. Survivors include her sons, William E. Carter Jr. and wife, Caren, of Brevard and Jeff Carter and wife, Debbie, of Newton; daughters, Terry C. Abernethy and husband, J.W. III, of Newton and Deborah C. Rights and husband, Robert, of Conover; brother, Roe Gabriel and wife, Beverly, of Charleston, S.C.; grandchildren, Catherine Abernethy, Kristen Morgan (Brian), Julius Abernethy IV, Staci Warner (Mitch), Alden Elliott (Justine), Geoff Rights, Ryan Rights, Allyson Bolden (Mitchell), Logan Carter, Joseph Vaughn (Robin), Douglas Vaughn and Shannon(Aaron) Patton; great-grandchildren, Carter Abernethy, Garrett Morgan, Theo Elliott, Macy Bolden, Sadie Bolden, Brennon Vaughn, Kameron Vaughn, Blake Sharpe, Blaine Sharpe and Caleb Patton. Services honoring Rachels life will be held at First United Methodist Church of Newton at 4 p.m. Monday, March 31, with burial to follow at Hopewell United Methodist Church in Sherrills Ford. The family will receive friends prior to the service in the Gomedela Room from 2:30 to 3:45 p.m. The Rev. Dr. David Greene and Lara Willis Greene will lead the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church Love Labor Corp or Imagine More Campaign, 300 N. Main Ave., Newton, NC 28658.
