Casuarina Rec Club’s Teams Challenge Sunday 14th July 2013, The highly anticipated day for a select few hard core trainers had finally arrived. With an early 7am crisp morning start, Casuarina Rec Club was hosting its inaugural Inter-gym Teams Challenge. Two specifically chosen Gyms, ‘Coynes Conditioning’ from Burleigh Heads and ‘Forge Fitness’ from Tweed Heads, up against the Rec Clubs Best. Representing the Rec Club in the three allocated Categories – Over 40’s: Steve Billet, Mason Garten and Rachael Bell Women’s Open: Katherine Billett, Kate Stoten, Carly Flood and Nat Hodgson Men’s Open: Jared McAlpin, Greg Costello and Rob Gordey Pre event hype surrounded the intense training and mind play from the guys at ‘Coynes Conditioning’, our Rec club Teams quickly realised they had a fight on their hands. From the pre-event brief it was clearly evident that whilst it was going to be a morning run with a fantastic camaraderie amongst all the athletes, the underlying vibe was the will to win and prove just who had the ‘Fittest Gym’! For those not fully aware of the Teams Challenge, it consists of 10 single activities, completed together as a Team, with points allocated during each activity added up to provide an overall total: 1. Beep Test 2. Box Jumps 3. Bench Press 4. Push-up / Burpee 180’Jumps 5. Rope Drag 6. Chin-ups 7. Vertical Jump 8. Suicide Shuttles 9. Agility Run 10. Row The Rec Club Girls Team had an early blow, with Kate Stoten severely tearing her calf muscle in the first run on the rope drag Katherine Billet stepped up to take Kate’s allocated Rope Drag Repetition along with the two of her own, ‘Great Effort Katherine’, with Nat Hodgson stepping in for the remaining events and performing well with such short notice. The Girls quickly regrouped to take second position overall behind the Coyne Conditioning with Forged Fitness coming in a close third. One of the most outstanding effort occurred in this division, with Forged Fitness inspirational 54year old, Hillary Dance-Wilson completing a staggering 52 repetitions of Bench Press (at 60% of her bodyweight), the closest female competitor at 22 repetitions. Courtney Gilfillan from Coyne Conditioning also pulled together a huge effort, by reaching a 12.9 on the Beep Test, beating all the Girls and most of the guys. Our Over 40s Team, which through the lead up to the day had a number of Team Member changes due to injuries, performed amazingly well to win their section, slightly ahead of Coyne Conditioning and Forged Fitness coming in a close third. The Men’s Open division highlighted some crazy levels of fitness and competiveness, with several record breaking results, including two amazing 500m Rowing efforts: Joseph Coyne (Coynes Conditioning) at 1min:23sec, and Casuarina Rec Clubs own Rob Gordey posting a 1min:22sec. In the rope drag the Casuarina Boys smashed a time of 3min: 28sec almost a full minute ahead of the nearest Team. Not satisfied with this effort, they then followed up and completed 101 Chin-ups in 3min to blitz the nearest effort by 10 reps. Efforts that eventually had the boys winning this division marginally ahead of the guys from Coyne Conditioning and Forged Fitness. Two wins out of Three Categories for the Rec Club Team was enough to claim the overall winner’s trophy and lay claim to being the Fittest Gym on the Coast. Final Overall placings on the day were: 1st Casuarina Rec Club 2nd Coynes Conditioning 3rd Forged Fitness Well done to all the competitors, a big thanks to our major sponsors – Mass Nutrition, Golden Door and Osteria Restaurant & Cafe (formally The Sandbar), and of course a huge thank-you to all the Referees and Scorers on the day and not to forget Lolita Sillars and Mick Gibson for helping out with the photography!
