Cats Starved and Forced to Smuggle Contraband into Prisons Someone recently took advantage of a cat’s natural abilities to climb and maneuver itself into tight and forbidding spaces and tried to smuggle cell phones and chargers to inmates at a prison camp in the Komi region in Russia’s far north. Guards “detained” the cat as it was trying to climb a fence in Komi’s Number One corrective labor camp. Two cell phones, batteries and chargers had been taped to the black and white cat’s back. “They have foiled various attempts to smuggle banned objects into Prison Colony Number One before, but in the case of the cat, the prison colony is at a loss: nothing like this has happened in the prison’s history,” the regional prison service said. Once fully grown, they are released into fenced enclosures where they are promptly killed by wealthy foreign trophy-hunters. This sport is entirely legal, and it is known as canned hunting. Canned hunting is a fast-growing business in South Africa: thousands of lions are being bred on ranches for the sole purpose of being murdered. It hasn’t always been like this. Five years ago, the South African government effectively banned canned hunting by requiring an animal to roam free for two years before it could be hunted. But that resulted in breeders and hunters losing a lot of money, so lion breeders, and particularly the South African Predator Breeder’s Association, challenged the policy in South Africa’s courts. A high court judge eventually ruled that such restrictions were “not rational.” Read more: care2/causes/lions-in-south-africa-bred-to-be-murdered.html#ixzz2VmaoZ9zb Dying Badger Cries Will be Used to Judge Humaneness of Cull Confidential documents obtained by the Humane Society International/UK have added further controversy by bringing to light the fact that those participating in the cull will have no experience shooting badgers and that the sounds badgers make while they’re dying will be used as a method to judge the humaneness of the cull – according to the report, observing an animal’s behavior and vocalizations is the “only method available to determine the degree of pain experienced” while they are dying. Pawfect Pets was created through a collaboration of eight animal welfare groups and the Singapore-based digital agency Yolk, and offers a perfect example of the kinds of ads we see from breeders …it even comes complete with multiple dog listings, advice on care and an offer for free grooming and delivery within 48 hours.
