Causes and Relief of Dandruff Do not confuse dandruff with other scalp disorders like psoriasis. Dandruff is a rather common condition that causes the untimely replenishment of skin cells, which ultimately form large clumps of the shedding skin cells on the scalp and distributed throughout the hair. Psoriasis is a severe skin disorder that also causes accumulation of skin cells on the scalp, but also affects other parts of the body as well, such as trunk, knees, and elbows. Psoriasis forms thick silvery scales that can in severe cases cause cracking and bleeding of the skin. Psoriasis is a severe skin disorder affecting about 3% of the population. While dandruff usually affects the scalp, it can sometimes in extreme situations also affect the eyebrows, nose, eyelashes, and neck regions. Left untreated, severe dandruff can turn into seborrhea dermatitis. Seborrhea dermatitis is a condition in which the oil glands become hyperactive. This causes the skin to become extremely oily, and it becomes an active breeding ground for fungi. Dandruff can occur due to internal or external causes, or both. Internal causes can range from poor health, lack of rest, emotional stress, hormonal disorders and more. External causes would be things like shampoos, and other products you put into your hair. Your scalp is an extremely sensitive area. You may have an allergy or sensitivity to a certain chemical contained within some of your hair products that triggers the allergy or sensitivity, which enhances the itch and flakiness. Often times, people make their dandruff worse by over treating the area. For instance, if you suffer from oily dandruff, the medicated shampoos are made to dry it up. This works unless you overuse the product. By overusing, you actually make the scalp so dry, that it stimulates the production of more oil! The exact opposite of what you intended. Over the counter shampoos can give some relief to mild dandruff cases. Severe cases of dandruff should seek a more potent prescription strength shampoo from a physician. Dandruff shampoos are used to relieve and reduce symptoms of dandruff, not to cure it. Some studies have shown however, that this condition can be cured through nutrition, diet, and other recommendations. This information can be found in various other sources.
