Celebrating life today! 13 years ago as I climbed the steps from the subway to my office in lower Manhattan, I emerged to see smoke billowing from a Trade Tower a few blocks away and acrid smoke filling the air. I wondered what a strange location for a fire before entering our building. Soon after, we evacuated twice before leaving (and prior to learning what had happened). I sat awhile a block away on a bench by the river with a coworker seeking her daughter, watching the confused, ash-covered and bewildered folks scrambling to get away. Walking home to Brooklyn a few hours later, I marveled at the destructive power of those who seek to hurt and destroy. I am thankful God spared our lives-- I believe I am here to serve others. May those with painful memories be comforted by the love of so many and by the God who seeks to give us full lives.
