The first FRIDAY FACT for 2015 is about Scheyville. In 1910 a Govt Agricultural Training Farm was established on part of the old Pitt Town Common which had been a Labour Settlement during the 1890s. It was named Scheyville after Francis William Schey a politician and public servant responsible for establishing the farm. As part of the Dreadnought Scheme, British boys were sponsored to Australia to learn basic agricultural skills and then find employment. They were taught about farming, shearing, dairying, blacksmithing etc. It was a hard life and often the boys came from cities and were not used to rural life. The Scheme finished in the 1930s. The locality around the farm became known as Scheyville. In later years the site was used as a Migrant Accommodation Centre (1949-1964) for those settling in Australia after WW2. In the 1960s an Officer Training Unit operated from Scheyville for National Servicemen training for deployment in the Vietnam War. In 1996 the Scheyville National Park was established.
