Challengers face uphill task in trying to unseat Umno incumbents: KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 9 — Incumbent Wanita Umno chief Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil is still in the lead to defend her position against challengers Datuk Maznah Mazlan and lawyer Raihan Sulaiman. Despite public opinion that her “star does not twinkle as bright as before”, the fact remains that the movement’s delegates are still firmly behind her. Maznah may have some plans but is finding it difficult to push her ideas as the movement has already charted its course. Maznah is said to be vigorously covering grounds and trying to catch up, which many consider highly unlikely, although there are a few who claim she can achieve her aim depending on the issues she raises. One blogger’s is of the view that if Maznah focuses on the role of the movement, she can consider herself “out of the race”, but she might scrape through if she relates to issues relevant to the contest. But with the code of ethics in place, Maznah is unlikely to play up issues to her advantage as this would disqualify her if there are complaints made to the election committee. Thus, keeping in line with the code, Maznah faces an uphill battle which suggests she is unlikely to unseat Shahrizat. On the Umno Youth front, incumbent Khairy Jamaluddin is also said to be in the lead. He also has the help of the movement’s exco members in his campaign. The only challenger giving Khairy a fight is Akhramsyah Sanusi while the other two candidates — Syed Rosli Syed Harman Jamallulail and Irwan Ambak Khalid Izhar — are considered spoilers. Observers say Akhramsyah could give Khairy a run for his money if Syed Rosli and Irwan withdraw and throw their support behind him. The current reading by observers is that Akhramsyah is lagging behind as votes against against Khairy will be split and the failings of his own campaign machinery. They say Akhramsyah can still catch up if his campaign goes smoothly as there are still a few days to go. His slogan “Hidup Melayu” is still the talk of the movement’s members. dlvr.it/465crp
