Chantell asked if lane-sharing is lane-splitting? Yes, - TopicsExpress

Chantell asked if lane-sharing is lane-splitting? Yes, Chantell, lane-sharing is also known as lane-splitting however, lane-sharing is a more correct term. Many years ago, I was cited and convicted for traffic infractions in an incident in which I claimed to be lane-splitting. I had just returned to my home in Oregon after a trip to California, where lane-splitting is legal. I was riding my motorcycle at a slow speed, between cars on the freeway, in a traffic-jam. I was pulled over by the police and cited for changing lanes with signalling, changing lanes in an unsafe manner, and reckless driving. When I went to trial to try to fight my case (without an attorney; big mistake) I tried to explain that I was lane-splitting, as they do in California. Well, Oregon does not permit lane-splitting so therefore, there is no such thing as riding between lanes. There is no space between lanes. When riding between cars, we are either in one lane or the other, no matter how close we are to the dotted line. Because we are in either one lane or the other, we are technically, sharing that lane with the car next to us. The phrase lane-sharing also sounds more friendly!
