Chapter-a-day: John 6. Our reading today is an incredible collection of powerful and overwhelming stories: the feeding of 5,000 men (and their wives and their children), Jesus walking on the sea, Jesus declaring He is the bread of life, Jesus being rejected by the Jews, and later by many of His disciples. The feeding of the 5,000 men tells us that Jesus can meet any need we have, regardless of how big it is. Jesus feeding this great number of people with the five barley loaves and two small fish from a young boy’s lunch, proposes that He can use the gifts of ordinary people like you and me to do extraordinary things. Twelve baskets of left overs were collected after the meal, telling us that Jesus wants us to carefully use available resources and the importance of being good stewards. Jesus desires to use you and me to do great and miraculous things. However, Ellen Whites points us to Peter’s experience: “When he turned his eyes from Jesus, his footing was lost, and he sank amid the waves. When trouble comes upon us, how often we are like Peter! We look upon the waves, instead of keeping our eyes fixed upon the Savior” (The Desire of Ages, p. 382). Let’s first feast on the spiritual bread of life today without preoccupation for our daily bread. This reality will keep us anchored in Jesus and lead us to eternal life.
