Charlie Wakeham got the riposte he wanted from Torquay Athletic against Penryn By Herald Express TORQUAY Athletic chief Charlie Wakeham will be looking for more of the same when his side visit Tiverton on Saturday.. The Tics ended a run of three defeats with a hard-earned 22-21 win over Penryn last time out and they welcomed back three players for their first outings of the season. Back five forward Rupert Edwards gave another ball carrying option and utility players Joe Ward and Ash Sharp each played on the wing. And it was wingmen Ward and Sharp who proved key to the victory with two tries each. Playing boss Wakeham had been highly critical of the side in public and private after their defeat at Sidmouth seven days earlier. He got just the response he wanted against Penryn and his hope is Torquay can keep to the same standard at Tiverton. I think some of the things said after the Sidmouth game hit home and the players wanted to prove a point to me, said Wakeham. They certainly did that and it was really pleasing to get that sort of reaction on the pitch. I thought the big difference was we stuck at it and played for each other. We also worked out how to deal with Penryn when they came at us and how to stop them going through us. We dont have a wealth of backs at the club, so for two new faces to score two tries each on the wings was another lift. Torquay were behind from the 12th to the 26th minutes when Alex Jeffrey floated a pass to Ward, who ran over. Jeffrey converted. Five minutes before half time Torquay were ahead after Ash Sharp pursued a seemingly lost cause and was rewarded with a charge-down try. Penryn scored two tries early in the second half which really tested Torquays resolve. The Tics were getting a fair share of ball but accuracy in the threes was a problem with the final pass often going astray. That was until after 50 minutes the ball was finally worked the full width of the pitch and Ward again made the line by using his strength to burst through the last defenders tackle. It was now 17-21. In a rousing finish Torquay counterattacked and Jamie Hext created an overlap and Sharp sprinted in from the 22, diving over in the corner, under pressure from the covering defence. Torquay Extras travelled to Exmouth IIs for a DMT1 match, initially starting the game with 14 players and no complete front row. A 15th finally arrived by motorbike! The home side lead the table and were far too strong and organised, running the ball at every opportunity. By half time Exmouth were over sixty points clear, so the Extras came out with some credit in limiting the final score to 88-3. The Colts lost 17-10 at Kingsbridge, where Ralph Morris and Josh Mackin were the try scorers.
