Check the Technique: Behind the Scenes of Five Classic Hip-Hop Albums Please join CU¹s Laboratory for Race and Popular Culture (RAP Lab) and Albums on the Hill in welcoming hip-hop historian Brian Coleman for an evening of music, conversation, and prize giveaways on April 16 at 6:30 pm at Albums on the Hill. Coleman is the author of the acclaimed book Check the Technique: Liner Notes for Hip-Hop Junkies and the forthcoming Check the Technique 2. Coleman will be joined by RAP Lab Director and CU Professor of English Adam Bradley (Book of Rhymes, The Anthology of Rap) and RAP Lab postdoctoral researcher Jack Hamilton to discuss the inside stories of five seminal hip-hop albums: De La Soul’s 3 Feet High and Rising, the Beastie Boys’ Check Your Head, Ice Cube’s AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted, the Fugees’ The Score, and a fifth title chosen by audience vote. Coleman is one of rap music¹s foremost oral historians and will draw from interviews, anecdotes, and of course the albums themselves to offer a lively and dynamic discussion sure to thrill both hip-hop connoisseurs and novices alike.
