Check this out! What a great write up! Thank you Loulou SMILEYS DICE: ADVENTURES IN LIVINGNESS THE BLOWUP AND BLOWOUT BASH: PHOTOGRAPHS BY BARON WOLMAN AT KRISTIN JOHNSON GALLERY. Kristin Johnson Gallery in SANTA FE, NEW MEXICO launched Baron Wolman‘s; The Groupies Exhibition. Baron shot the tears, laughter, and moves of the groupies as they hung on to the coat tails of Jim Morrison Jimi Hendrix, The Stones, The Who, Jefferson Airplane, you get the picture. He was the First Rock & Roll Photographer for Rolling Stone Magazine and continues to publish and print throughout the world. As I approached the Gallery, the excitement of a hip, improvisational, unpretentious vintage 60’s party was in the motion. The photographs take you inside the Keene eyes of the sixties groupies; bearing frosted eye lids, Joni Mitchell hair, feather boa’s and Twiggy bodies. Like a double feature movie day; the exhibition unveiled Baron’s first big blowups.Black and white photographs brushed on aluminum of Mick Jagger on the set of Performance, Tina Turner emblazoning an audience, Johnny Cash, BB King and Janis Joplin; portraits that stampede for your attention. That was only the first room, further into the gallery, Gabriella Marks, Santa Fe based photographer shot photos of the guests after they’d been painted groupie gazing fawns by a make-up artist. Squeezing in between, Doug Magnus and Dana Waldon, I entered into a salon featuring photographs of legendary groupies. They are models of the roaring sixties; buds of sensuality that all climaxed at once when rock & roll hit the radio stations. The blowups were emotional tide-pools that dropped the guests into threads of the experimental, outrageous, and loving peace generation history. Also on the scene: Jason Appleton and Kathy Haggerty, Tony Bonanno, Brian Coffin, Gloria Devan, Dianne Duenzl, Baron’s Studio manger, Jennifer Esperanza, Rudy Funk, Darren Vigil Gray, Richard Kurtz, Dennis and Beverly Little, and celebrated photographer, Lisa Law. The animated star of the evening was Baron, airborne in his Puma’s, waving arms and smiling in blowup fashion, “Wow, everyone’s here!” A round of applause for Kristin and Baron. The resurrection of the theatrical Santa Fe gallery opening has begun.
