Chellie Pingree and Rep. Cedric Richmond and Congressman José E. Serrano Dont be a part of this failure. Please pass H.R.1830 Accelerating the End of Breast Cancer Act of 2013! Another Healthcare Failure During his initial Presidential Campaign (2008) Obama/Biden constructed a “Plan to Combat Cancer”. This was an impressive and ambitious plan. Unfortunately, the Plan hasn’t gotten past the initial proposal and it is time to answer to the millions of citizens of who have been touched by cancer. The Plan sought to double federal funding for cancer research for such agencies as the National Institute of Health (NIH), the National Cancer Institute (NCI), and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). There is no documented evidence these three agencies have benefitted from the Obama/Biden “Plan to Combat Cancer”. The Plan was to ensure that all Americans have access to preventative health care by strengthening partnerships between federal, state, and local public health authorities; by expanding access to proven community-based prevention programs; extending prevention efforts into workplaces and schools; and supporting federal initiatives such as the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program. Again, there is no documented evidence of partnerships or support of federal cancer initiatives. The Plan was to improve access to clinical trials, in part, by requesting the NCI Director to identify regulatory barriers that prevent the timely implementation and completion of successful clinical trials. Again, there is no documented evidence this goal was achieved. Additionally, the Plan’s goal of implementing and funding patient-centered programs to help individuals access and pursue comprehensive cancer treatment has no documented proof of being accomplished. Federal Coordination of Cancer Research, Treatment and Awareness Programs has also met the same fate as other aspects of the Plan Perhaps two of the most interesting aspects of the Plan were the goals to continue supporting advances in personalized medicine in conjunction with the Genomics and Personalized Medicine Act, and determining the most effective approaches to assist cancer patients in navigating through the cancer diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up steps to ensure continued lifelong health. As a breast cancer survivor with a family history of ALL types of cancer, the Plan played a major factor in my decision of who to vote for. I am deeply saddened to find little to no progress on the steps outlined in the Plan to Combat Cancer. Barring current STAGNANT legislation in both Houses (H.R.1830/S.865 – Accelerating the End of Breast Cancer Act of 2013), Obama/Biden has failed to make strides in a very important area of concern for most Americans.
