#Chengguan get a taste of #vendors lives A new initiative by the City #Urban #Management Bureau of Neihuang County, Henan Province, has caused quite a stir on social media in China. Under the program, the Chengguan, or city management officials, were, on Monday, required to play the role of street vendors for a day, according to a report in the People’s Daily. The Chengguan are responsible for dealing with street vendors and enforcing rules on city sanitation, landscaping and parking. Over the last few years, they have come under increasing criticism for their management style, with frequent clashes being reported with street vendors. Many people have, in fact, charged the officials with insensitivity and adopting a heavy-handed approach. Taking that into account, this experimental initiative was designed to provide the officials with first-hand experience of the hardships that vendors encounter. The program, according to the report, was conceived in order to improve communication and understanding between the #Chengguan and street vendors. Sina Weibo users weighed in on this initiative. “It will still take time and efforts to change the broader situation. But it’s better than doing nothing.” @Xiaoxiangzixxz. “Is this really helpful? The nature of a Chengguan’s job is to strictly enforce the law and punish all offenders…In order to safeguard most people’s interests, lawbreakers need to be punished. That’s what we call a society ruled by law and that is your responsibility. ” @Beijingfuyoujiehoudali. “Since it’s an ‘exchange of roles’, street vendors should also perhaps do the Chengguan’s job in order to understand the hardships they experience.” @Congfengyuzhonglai.
