Lake Superior..South Channel off Grants Point ~ In 1953 a - TopicsExpress

Lake Superior..South Channel off Grants Point ~ In 1953 a phenomenon was noted in the bottom of the lake, about 100 yards off shore to the west and slightly south of the fort. An old crib about twelve feet square, with its top even with the lake bottom, was discovered in about seven feet of water. Inside the crib, the water was about 12 feet deep with an accumulation of debris. Since, under ordinary conditions the crib would have been filled with sand, it was was deduced that a spring of sufficient size to clear out any collection of sand in the crib must exist at the bottom. Because means were not at hand to clear out the debris in order to see the spring proper, a test was made with a thermometer. The latter read 48 degrees Fahrenheit when lowered to the bottom of the crib. At the same time, the temperature of the water a few feet away from the crib and on the lake bottom read 64 degrees. This seemed to prove that there was undoubtedly a spring in the bottom of the crib. (Lapointe - Village Outpost) with Nick Vander Puy
