Chinese and Russian navies are about to begin a joint exercise outside the Russian Far East naval port of Vladivostok called "Sea Cooperation - 2013," according to this article posted by RIA Novosti. Maneuvers to be held from July 8 to 10 in the Peter the Great Bay near Vladivostok will involve about 20 warships and auxiliary vessels of different classes, more than 10 aircraft and helicopters. The Chinese sent seven vessels to participate. The article cites Deputy Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Leonid Sukhanov, saying the pending exercise is "academic" in nature and not directed against any country. Chinese Vice-Admiral Dean Ipin is reported to have stressed that the exercises are not directed against any country, and are being conducted to improve the interaction between the military of both fleets in the fight against piracy.
