Christmas Nostalgia Contest Entry. I hope this photo scan comes through okay. This picture is from about 1970. I’m styling in my new brown bell bottoms and orange shirt. One of my three sisters is at the organ, and my brother is in the foreground - likely taking one of this new Christmas toys apart. By the end of the day, all of his stuff would usually be in pieces and squirreled away under the farthest corner of the platform that supported the tree. He was always the brave soul who was daring enough to sneak down the stairs and peek around the corner to see if Santa had arrived yet. Then he’d scurry back upstairs and wake everyone else. One year my folks had just gone to bed in the wee hours of the morning when by brother announced that Santa had arrived. The next year we had a new rule – no one goes downstairs on Christmas morning until 7 am. Fortunately, (or in my parents’ case unfortunately) we had a cuckoo clock. Tom would sneak downstairs to confirm that Santa’s delivery had arrived then wake the rest of us with the news. The five of us would sit at the top of the staircase excitedly waiting for the cuckoo clock as we counted out the hour… always hoping against hope that this was the year that seven was somehow going to magically fall between five and six. All the while, we would be chattering away about what we hoped Santa had brought. Of course, all of this was happening right outside the door to our parents’ bedroom which was just at the top of the stairs. Sitting at the top of those stairs with my brother and sisters in anticipation of what was about to happen is among my favorite Christmas memories.
