Christmas and Chemistry in the Movies #9 In Kids in the Hall: Brain Candy (1996), a group of pharmaceutical chemists work in a subterranean lab called “Depression Project”, where researchers in white lab coats are working and eating food. There is a monkey in a cage and bubbling apparatus nearby. After lightning flashes outside, one of the researchers writes the word ‘happy’ on a chalkboard who then drops the chalk in astonishment. The camera pulls out to a wide shot of the blackboard full of chemical structures and chemical equations. Next, the research team decides to test the drug on female patient 57 who is in a deep depression. When she swallows the blue pill, we watch it enter her stomach, turn everything blue, and then electrify her brain. She has a memory of a happy Christmas and is now smiling. Except that the memory really isnt that happy. This is a deep dark comedy. trashcinemacollective/2010/09/09/kids-in-the-hall-brain-candy-a-sweet-sadness/
