Christmas time has arrived and the New Year is upon us. For many of us it is a time of reflection as we check in on our perceived accomplishments and failures, and ponder on our direction. For many it is a joyous time of family unity, and for many more it is a stressful time spent subordinating to expectations of family, friends and society; a time of disunity and disappointment. The end of one year and start of another is often the platform we use to end things and start new ventures. As I travel through Europe during this time, the celebration of Christmas seems to make more sense than in the hot Australian summer and the scorching December sun. In the bleak, cold and dim short days of the northern hemisphere winter, this time has become the festival of light for many regions. Beauty and magic created by thousands of sparkling fairy lights brightening the otherwise dank atmosphere. Light amplified and reflected in the misty chilled air. I believe the symbology of light is a truer meaning of what Christmas is about. The origins of Christmas were adopted from the earlier Pagan equinox celebrations, where here in the Northern Hemisphere the Light (the sun) for 3 days is at its most furthest distance from the earth, and on the 25th December, the Light returns - bringing forth a return of energy, of new life, hope and brighter possibilities. Christmas and the New Year is a great time to reflect on our own Light and the Light of others. Our light being our soul, our connection to the Divine Light within ourselves and within the world around us. Rather than feeling trapped by the commercialism of Christmas, we can use this time to truly connect and feel inspired. Instead of New Year resolutions that dont last, make a whole of life resolution - decide to follow your own path, be guided by your own light and be who you be! Being your true authentic self is the best gift you can give to your loved ones.
