CineGear: Attendees Get First Shot at Samurai Blade Monitor-Recorders If you were lucky enough to swing by Paramount Studios for CineGear, you had the chance to pick up the new Atomos Samurai Blade Monitor/Field Recorder before they came out anywhere else. Announced at NAB a few months back, the Blade offers a Super Atom IPS Touch Screen (think iPhone Retina grade) with a resolution of 1280×720 at 320 dpi. And when you see how affordable this recorder is, you’re going to want to get your hands on one to use. “We’re the first to combine true, professional monitor functionality with recording and deck playout, all in a space-saving, camera-mountable unit.” – Atomos CEO Jeromy Young The Blade also records in either ProRes HQ or Avid ANX 220 with 4:2:2 at 10-bit color with deep rich blacks, bold colors, and thanks to it’s retina like IPS seriously sharp resolution. It offers waveform support, Zebra stripes, false color, and full size B&C connectors. And it can records to hard drives or SSDs, and you can use up to a 500 GB hard drive, to record up to 5 hours in ProRes, while a simple 60GB SSD can record over an hour with Pro Res Lite or 45 minutes at full resolution. Of course, some may worry that recording to spinning hard drives can be problematic out in the field, but the Blade’s housing is designed to avoid head seeking or skipping. And with spinning drives at $50 for 500GB, .10 a GB is pretty dirt cheap. In fact, Atomos doesn’t even bother to include a hard drive with the package because they know that users can get the hard drives cheaper online. -James DeRuvo Other specs for the Atomos include: *5″ SuperAtom IPS Panel *Full sized BNC connectors *In-Plane Switching technology *Record up to 1080/30p/60i, 10-bit, 4:2:2 to ProRes or DNxHD direct from sensor S-Log / C-Log *Synced REC trigger *Play back your shots and takes on the fly on set, in the field in a restaurant or on the plane *The capacitive touch panel gives lightning-quick response times and gesture capability *Fully adjustable gamma, brightness, contrast *Built in wave form monitor *Records direct to edit codecs Apple ProRes and Avid DNxHD onto commodity 2.5” hard discs *HDMI Input via Optional Atomos Converter *File Recovery in case you accidentally pull the power or remove the storage drive while recording *6 watts of power, nearly five times less than the nearest competitor *12 channels of digital and 2 of analog audio always available to view and monitor on headphone jacks or line out *Any Apple ProRes or Avid DNxHD file from any system, recorder or edit suite can be played back using AtomOS *Speedy navigation, cutting and tagging on short and long clips *hot-swap drives at any time without having to play games with the OS *Connections include 1x HD-SDI input and 1x HD-SDI loop-output *Supports ARRI and RED for Monitoring *Built from aircraft grade aluminum
