City Council Workshop Thur., 9/19/2013: Signage Mayor Cater once - TopicsExpress

City Council Workshop Thur., 9/19/2013: Signage Mayor Cater once again voiced his desire for businesses in the Historic District (HD) to be able to display as many and the same kinds of signs as businesses outside the HD. The discussion of changes to sign regulations in Tifton’s LDC (Land Development Code) revolved around the issue of moving, blinking, etc. lighted signs. Council seemed to desire commercial areas outside the HD to have the option of using just about any lighted or other type of sign they desired. There was talk about how restrictive lighted sign regulations in the HD should be, especially in light of remarks from business people. (Although the past two council workshops rather forcefully reinstated the “no public input” rule, it was effectively waived at the mayor’s request last night after one businessman asked to speak.) Buck Rigdon asked the council to clarify what their intentions were related to the HD and seemed to be assured that no deleterious consequences were contemplated, although this attendee remains unsure how this is to be accomplished. Between council remarks related to text of the existing LDC and of the proposed changes to the LDC, it was unclear exactly what the final wording and its effects will be to the HD. When the proposed legislation is finalized, it will be posted here. There was no mention or discussion about the Planning and Zoning Commission’s suggestion that council should study the potential loophole to lighted sign restrictions represented by allowing lighted signs to be displayed inside windows.
