Clancy Pendergast (5-2; formerly 4-1) Pendergast, out of coaching for the 2014 season, is becoming more and more the favorable choice inside the LSU coaching staff and the interest is mutual. His experience and knowledge of defending Pac-12 spread offenses while at California (2010-12) and USC (2013) are weighing heavily in his favor. If Pendergast does get the nod, he could bring in Louisiana native Ed Orgeron as defensive line coach if current LSU line coach Brick Haley leaves. Haley has strong ties to Chavis, who coached him in college at Alabama A&M. Haley recently signed a two-year contract for about $400,000 but has an attainable buyout figure. Pendergast, 47, has a long association with the NFL, having coordinated defenses for five NFL franchises and has been sought out as a consultant by NFL teams trying to stop Philadelphia Eagles coach Chip Kellys spread offense. He served as the Cowboys secondary coach all three years of LSU coach Les Miles tenure in Dallas (1998-2000) as tight ends coach. Pendergast was not retained by first-year new coach USC Steve Sarkisian for the 2014 season despite the Trojans ranking No. 1 in the Pac-12 in passing defense and No. 2 in rushing defense the previous year. He has served as defensive coordinator for the Arizona Cardinals (2004-08), coaching in Super Bowl XLIII, and with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2009. He has also held duties as a position coach with the Cleveland Browns (linebackers, 2003) in addition to Dallas.
