Clara Driscoll (see first photo), who built the Driscoll Hotel in honor of her brother, Robert in 1942...and who lived in the huge penthouse at the top...died abruptly in 1945. Her body was laid in state inside the Alamo because of her successful effort to save it from demolition in 1908. Upon her death, she left her considerable fortune for the creation of a hospital for children. When it opened in 1953 on Alameda it provided free care for children of those who could not afford to pay (see second pic). Driscoll Foundation Childrens Hospital still exists as one of the premiere childrens hospitals in the state and has expanded greatly since 1953 (see last, recent pic)
