Comet Hyakutake One of the closest comets to pass by the Earth. - TopicsExpress

Comet Hyakutake One of the closest comets to pass by the Earth. It got as close as one tenth of an Astronomical Unit (.1 AU) An astronomical unit is the mean distance from the Earth to the Sun... I was so prepared to grab it photographically. In fact it was so close that through the telescope you could actually see its movement relative to the background stars... It was amazing!! It is for that reason that I had to set my scope guiding to the comet itself. Otherwise the comet would have blurred during the exposure. That is why the comet is clear and the stars are trailing in this shot..all because the comet is close and it is moving though the background stars!! Taken from the dark desert skies north of Tonopah Arizona. 1996
