Comic-Con 2013 There’s a wonderful time all San Diegans can look forward to in the Summer around mid-July when you can’t drive around the Gaslamp to save your life. The freaks and geeks come out in full regalia impersonating their favorite comic/pop/whatever personality. Promotions and commotions and events happening all over town, what could this mean? Alright, let me hit you with my 2013 Comic-Con review. Let me start from the beginning, I earn my way in by helping my old boss and local comic retailer set up his booths. Starting on Tuesday it takes two days to set up showcases and displays in preparation for what’s to come. Let me tell you, it’s amazing to be behind the scenes and watch the bare floor grow into the wonderful bizarre that it is. One of the perks of being there at that time is you get to see the lay out off the entire floor with plenty of space to move and take pictures. It’s great! Enter Preview night. After rounding up the 3 nephews and 1 niece it’s back to the Convention Center to get their badges and to examine the floor. All the big names are in lights and in full effect. Star Wars, Warner Bros., Marvel, DC, XBOX, Playstation, Capcom, LEGO, Image, Top Cow, Hasbro, Mattel, the list of childhood magic goes on. Not to forget the smaller booths where you can see some of your favorite artist and their works, sketches, books, prints, toys, T-shirts, It doesn’t stop. And so many people. You get the cosplayers dressed as all kinds of characters, who get all decked and are usually happy to let you snap a flick with them. Then there are the Exclusives ninjas whose major purpose is to get in line and grab the hottest items and collect or throw on ebay (or both). From personal experience there is a pretty penny to be made in this manner. From anime to video games it’s sensory overload to the extreme. Which brings me to Thursday. This was my day with the kids (luckily I have 3 well behaved nephews) and turned out to be great. We started off by getting to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles panel featuring Kevin Eastman and crew talking about the direction the comic was headed in. On screen they showed some drawings of a couple of my favorite villains, Bebop and Rocksteady which were freakin’ awesome. Then downstairs to take the boys shopping. T-shirts, comics, and toys galore, need I say more. Then back upstairs to catch the Capcom presentation of upcoming releases. Highlights for me were for one the remastered version of Disney’s Ducktales game. An NES classic I loved as a child coming to the new consoles and it looked amazing. The announcement of Ultra Street Fighter IV told of 5 new characters coming, one shrouded in mystery, was awesome. And then the new Strider hit the screen and I was impressed. After that, a quick lunch, then back to roam around awhile before heading home. I don’t want to neglect mentioning all the other wonderful panels I missed, from the how to break into the respective business you want to be in panels to the upcoming hot comics and everything in between. Workaholics and Dexter were on Thursday as well and I wish I could have made those but, what can you do? On Friday I get up at 4:00 in the morning to get in the Hall H line by 5:00. As a reward for my waiting Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg, and Nick Frost present clips from their upcoming flick The World’s End. These guys did Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz and I’m hoping they kill with this one. After Veronica Mars came Trailers for Kickass2 and Riddick with Vin Diesel which both look awesome and I can’t wait. Now highlights. Walking Dead came with almost the full cast and showed a teaser which, if you couldn’t wait before, oh man, well you still have tyo wait but it looks awesome. And my favorite of the day, Game of Thrones. They showed a deleted scene between Tywin And Pycelle, followed by Q&A. Now Peter Dinklage seemed a little jet lagged or something but who cares, moon of my life Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen) was there. Not to mention Kiy Harrington((Jon Snow) and Michelle Fairley (Catelyn Stark) and John Bradley (Samwell Tarley) to name a few. That came with a new bag, t-shirt, book, notebook and more. Made it worth getting up at 4:00 in the morning let me tell you. I wish I could have done it again Saturday but didn’t have the energy, but those who did got some great panels. Warner Bros. is always great and I regret missing the announcement of the new Superman featuring Batman. Live action, how awesome is that? Marvel Studios would have been great to catch as well. They presented the new Captain America and Thor movies as well as announcing the Guardian of the Galaxies flick. I did however make it to Kevin Smith who lights up Hall H at the close of every Saturday at comic-con. Sunday Hall H panels included Breaking Bad, which is a great show, and apparently I’m the only person who knows nothing about Doctor Who which has a crazy fan following. Now I love It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and they had a great panel showing an episode of the from the upcoming season followed by Q&A and Sons of Anarchy, another great FX show. That came with an Always Sunny T-shirt and Sons key chain, and like that, the con is over I hope this review has been informative and I suggest anyone who hasn’t been to go. It’s a wonderful time filled with ooh’s and awe’s. Stay classy San Diego and may the force be with you..
