Often us Australians give the Poms a hard time, but we tend to misunderstand them. Bob was typical, he was very much the British public school type, seemingly aloof and toffee nosed – his family was related to royalty or something or other and it showed. But in reality he was a down to earth chap who’d give you the shirt off his back. There had been times when the flack or fighters were so thick I thought we’d had it, and Bob’s understated: “Bit of a sticky wicket, what?” always broke the tension.
