Coming soon: Walk a Twisted Fate Book I of the Trilogy “MERRINGURRA” By Clerke O’Brien “The year, 1869. Throughout the south-eastern region of the new colony of Queensland drought stricken cattle perish in vast numbers. The same dramatic situation abounds on the ORourke property, Merringurra. Arriving home from Brisbane with his bride Kate, Ben discovers his father died mustering cattle. Grieving, he takes to whisky; which drastically alters his personality. In 1858, en-route from Sydney to Brisbane, Ben meets Kate Ferguson aboard the Celeste. She deceives him about her age. The Celeste is wrecked. Ben begrudgingly saves Kate, then is determined to forget her. Meeting again, her deceitfulness forgiven, they marry. Brendan, youngest ORourke brother, is infatuated with Bens wife. Over time certain feelings materialise towards Kate, which are resisted. Shane, middle brother, is nothing like the other two. They are tall of height, muscular. Consumed by jealousy, his growth stunted by the Irish famine, he has a bitter twisted mind. Shane is determined to cause whatever trouble he can. Matthew Glendenning, powerful landowner on the Darling Downs, conducts a vendetta against the ORourke family. In 1859, shortly after establishing Merringurra, Shamus ORourke, taking cattle to market, discovers the bodies of two Aborigines; whod be executed by Samuel Glendenning as a warning to other Indigenous people after an attack upon his property. They were innocent. Matthew refutes the evidence Shamus gave at the trial. His father dies in prison. Shamus also found alive, a young Aboriginal boy. Taking him to Merringurra, he becomes William Sunday. Matthew devises a plan to harass the ORourkes. He hires two men. While Kate is alone they enter Merringurra, rape and degrade her. Brendan sees them leaving the property, rides for the homestead to learn of what happened. Alienate by Bens drinking, although strenuously pushed aside, Kate develops feelings for Brendan. He is always considerate toward her; like Ben used to be. Watching him riding after her attackers, she whispers, “I love you, Brendan.” This is the first time she has admitted her feelings for her husbands youngest brother – even to herself.” Similar books that have been published: THE THORN BIRDS, Colleen McCullough – ALL THE RIVERS RUN, Nancy Cato – PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK, Joan Lindsay – THE TIMELESS LAND, Eleanor Dark – ROBBERY UNDER ARMS, Thomas Alexander Browne (writing as Rolf Boldrewood) – FOR THE TERM OF HIS NATURAL LIFE, Marcus Clarke – THE POTATO FACTORY, Bryce Courtenay.
