Sir Bernard was in Tottenham High Road at the junction of Bruce Grove, N17 recording an interview with BBC London Radio, when a minicab skidded to stop at the traffic lights as the driver called for police help. The Commissioner then returned to the scene where he got into a police car and continued the search. In nearby Napier Road, N17 one of the suspects, a 19-year old man was spotted by The Commissioner and he arrested him on suspicion of theft and making off without payment. The suspects were taken to a north London police station. Speaking to the BBC shortly afterwards, Sir Bernard said: I have made an arrest at every rank, even as Chief Constable at Merseyside but never in my time as Commissioner, and I have been here for three years. Thats very slack, but today we put that right. Sir Bernards last arrest was in 2006 when he was Chief Constable of Merseyside.
