Communication reflector antennas. Florida City. 1957. Telephone conversations and television are beamed between U.S. and Cuba by over-the-horizon communications system, a joint undertaking of Long Lines Department of American Telephone and Telegraph Company and the Radio Corporation of Cuba which is a subsidiary of International Telephone and Telegraph Corporation. Square 60-foot reflectors transmit and receive signals flashed between Florida City, Florida and Guanabo, Cuba. Reflectors beam signals toward a receiver located beyond curvature of earth, or over the horizon. Signals strike layer of air known as troposphere and enough energy is reflected downward to provide clear and reliable service. Photo courtesy of Jim Toth.
