Community Credit Union Donates to School Supply Store VIERA, FLA. – Thanks to Community Credit Union, a $6,000 donation to purchase computers will help get Brevard Schools Foundation’s newest project, the Supply Zone for Teachers, off the ground. The Supply Zone, located at the former Clearlake Middle School in Cocoa, is a store designed to put school supplies into the hands of teachers—for free. The first teachers were welcomed to the store this past Thursday, May 15th, as an invitation only open house to receive free supplies. “Community Credit Union believes that teachers should have every resource needed to teach their students more effectively,” said David Brock, President of Community Credit Union. “When students come to school without supplies, it’s the teachers who are reaching into their own pockets. The Supply Zone will help relieve that burden on our teachers and make it easier for them to receive donated supplies for their students in need.” Many teachers in Brevard Public Schools spend $400 or more of their own money each year to buy supplies for students who come in lacking the basics, according the Brevard Schools Foundation. In polling teachers, they found the number one requested item is pencils. The Supply Zone will stock those and other basic supplies, eventually expanding to arts and crafts, hygiene items and other classroom materials. “We are extremely grateful to Community Credit Union for their cash donation to buy computers,” said Janice Kershaw, the Foundation’s executive director. “Their generous donation is being matched by a grant through the Consortium of Florida Education Foundations and will allow us to meet even more needs.” According to Kershaw, the store is still ramping up, building its inventory system and collecting donations of supplies to become fully stocked before a grand opening in the fall. Brevard Public Schools teachers in the highest poverty schools will be the first to receive shopping privileges with more schools added as donations increase. Until that time, other schools’ teachers may earn shopping trips by volunteering in the store. Community volunteers are also needed to work during the day when teachers are in school.
