Congratulations to ToolBox TomGirl, LLC from Pasadena, MD for being featured in our cover photo! From the Owner: "After spending over 30 years in the corporate world, I had a life-changing experience (more like a “laid off” moment) and turned my life around. I founded ToolBox TomGirl, LLC (formerly known as Reliable Repairs, Inc.), a successful residential and commercial repair company. We specialize in most small home repairs that larger contractors won’t do, as well as facility maintenance, and remodels of kitchens and bathrooms. People might believe that women and tools just don’t go together; that women are not good at repairs; that women usually need someone else to fix it for them. But I believe that when women think they lack the capability to do their own home repairs, it’s not just a confidence issue. It’s a financial one. The “I can’t” costs women a fortune in professional services every year. Jobs that would require only 30 minutes for a woman to both learn and perform can take $350 out of her wallet if she believes she can’t. In fact, that was the brainstorm behind ToolBox TomGirl – to provide women with a one-of-a-kind opportunity to become more independent, confident and self reliant through the simple act of, oh say, installing recessed lighting and ceiling fans to support task and ambient lighting. Beyond women’s DIY, ToolBox TomGirl is a woman-run, woman-operated (MBE/DBE) residential and commercial repair service in Maryland. Today, I teach women how to make their own home repairs via speaking engagements, a monthly eNewsletter, Webcasts and more. I know that when I’m showing a woman how to repair her own toilet, I’m giving her more than just a working toilet. I am a wife and mother to grown twins (a girl and a boy). I hold a B.S. in Business Management with an emphasis in Leadership from the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School. I am a 2009 and 2012 recipient of the Top 100 Minority Business Owner Awards, The 2012 Woman of the Year for the Baltimore Washington Corridor Chamber of Commerce (BWCC), and the 2012 Willow Award winner for the Association of Builders and Contractors (ABC) . If that doesn’t keep me busy enough, I’m also a member of the National Association of Women in Construction, BWCC, ABC, Sisters in the Building Trades, Pasadena Business Association, and a past Board member of the National Association of Women Business Owners. So, with each frustration, success, sleepless night, hurdle overcome, setback conquered and goal achieved, Yep! I, Jo Ellen Soesbee, Built This!"
