Congratulations to one of my science students Kendrick McQueen for winning the Rochester Police Departments Do The Right Thing Award for June! Kendrick was the student I was talking with when I was assaulted by another student in my classroom in March. I was sitting in a rolling chair when another student suddenly grabbed me from behind in a rear-naked-choke hold. As I struggled to safely free myself from the student, I tried to stand. As I did so the chair rolled and there was a loud POP. The pop was the meniscus and ACL in my left knee. I fell to the floor, and Kendrick stayed right by my side to prevent the other student from continuing his violent attack. The other student danced around celebrating what he had done. Kendrick refused to leave my side. The bell sounded ending the school day. All the other students ran for their busses. Once they were all gone Kendrick was still there. He said he was going to get another science teacher and the school nurse to help, and ran out the door. True to his word he returned with both the teacher and the nurse. He and the teacher helped me to get up and sit in a chair, and then elevate my leg to ice my knee. While I was icing my knee Kendrick quietly asked Um, Mr. DeRycke... can I get a bus pass to go home? I missed my regular bus. I said ABSOLUTELY! Dont worry about it. Well call the office right now, and theyll have it ready for you on your way out. Thank you for what you did. He responded Aw anybody would have done that. I said No they wouldnt. Did you notice that everyone else ran away? He smiled and shrugged as he left the room to go home. Immediately the next day, as I sat resting at home, I got online and nominated Kendrick for this award. The award he so greatly deserves. For if Kendrick had not been by my side that day, things very well could have turned out so much worse for me. Thank You Kendrick!
