Congress returns next week to Washington, D.C., for a very busy - TopicsExpress

Congress returns next week to Washington, D.C., for a very busy legislative session in September, and we need as many voices as possible supporting a completed Farm Bill. Much work remains to get to a final piece of legislation that will pass both the House and Senate, and that the President will sign into law. For more than 30 years, American Farmland Trust has fought hard for programs to protect farm and ranch land and to promote sound farming practices. We have achieved major reforms to farm and conservation policy, successfully advocating for the repeal of direct payment subsidies and for relinking conservation compliance to crop insurance premium subsidies. We have effectively pushed Congress to limit cuts to farmland conservation programs, while streamlining programs for maximum effectiveness and efficiency. But we have not done this work alone. Supporters like you have lifted their voices to push for policies and programs that protect farmland and keep land and water healthy. We again need your help. Tell Congress to finish the job. Together we have exceeded our initial goal of 10,000 messages to Capitol Hill during the August recess. In what few days remain, let’s double down and send 20,000 messages. Contact your Members of Congress today and tell them to finish the Farm Bill! American Farmland Trust has also worked to keep farmers on the land. We have helped create opportunities through the Farm Bill for beginning farmers and ranchers, for farmers markets, and for better access to healthy, nutritious food. Hundreds of millions of dollars for these programs are in jeopardy if Congress cannot finish its work and send the Farm Bill to the President before September 30. The Farm Bill is at a critical juncture. Decades of policy reforms could be lost if a final bill is not passed in September. Join the chorus banging on the doors of Congress. Thank you for all that you do to protect and conserve farmland, our most precious natural resource. Sincerely, Andrew McElwaine Andrew McElwaine President American Farmland Trust https://secure2.convio.net/aft/site/Advocacy;jsessionid=1B9C9323F4FC254855198C4809D9174E.app272b?pagename=homepage&page=UserAction&id=427&autologin=true&AddInterest=1265
