Constant muscle tension and focused recruitment of a muscle is required for optimal gains in muscular hypertrophy. If you can`t feel a muscle contracting or `engaging` then you will find it very hard to optimise muscle growth. Muscles do not register the weight on the bar but the level of tension they detect in response to lifting a weight. Select a weight where you feel the muscle contract to an intense level and aim to maintain that contraction and focus throughout each set. This may require you to use less weight than you may otherwise be able to lift. Don`t let your ego get in the way of your results.
