Construction starts on major Tullamarine freight hub at Melbourne Airport Victoria’s position as a freight and logistics hub was strengthened today with the start of construction on TNT’s largest logistics hub. Minister for Public Transport and Roads Terry Mulder took a tour of the site today with TNT’s Managing Director - Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands, Peter Langley, and reiterated the importance projects like this have in building Victoria’s economy. “I’m proud that the largest transport and logistics hub in TNT’s global network is now being constructed at the Melbourne Airport Business Park,” Mr Mulder said. “The new $80 million logistics and distribution centre will address capacity constraints and growth in demand and is expected to meet TNT’s projected needs for at least the next 15 years. “Importantly, the new facility will boost jobs including truck drivers and dockhands. There will be 860 staff working at the new site including 55 call centre jobs. “By setting up in Tullamarine, TNT is confirming a trend in the transport, distribution and logistics industry that has seen the north and west of Melbourne become the preferred home for new projects. “In addition, projects like this reaffirm the private sector’s support for Victoria’s freight industry,” Mr Mulder said. Minister for Ports David Hodgett said the Napthine Government is committed to supporting Victoria’s freight and logistics sector and is getting on with delivering initiatives from the Victorian Freight and Logistics Plan (VFLP). “The Victorian Government has reopened rural freight lines, upgraded signalling and opened up the road network to Higher Productivity Freight Vehicles (HPFV),” “The Government’s prime consideration in launching the VFLP last year was to build on the progress made and ensure the preservation of Victoria’s status as the nation’s freight and logistics capital and of Melbourne Airport as a key freight gateway. “The freight and logistics sector generates jobs and attracts investment for Victoria and I’m proud the Government has made a huge investment of up to $9.1 billion in this year’s budget to ensure that freight’s contribution to the Victorian economy both continues and strengthens.” Mr Mulder said that projects like the East West Link, the CityLink-Tulla widening, the Murray Basin Rail Project and Port Rail Shuttle services will deliver improvements in efficiency and travel times that will flow directly to the freight and logistics sector. The TNT Tullamarine logistics and distribution centre is funded by the private sector and will be completed in 2015.
