Contempt of court and a day in the Supreme Court It was Thursday (March, 6). A contempt rule hearing was run against Prothom Alo’s Joint Editor Mizanur Rahman Khan. At one stage Lawyer Rokanuddin Mahmud had commented on the media and journalists that the media men have no character and they less qualified than police to the court. We heard this on Friday night. We suddenly protested in mind, but was no scope to send it to the mass people. On Saturday, Dhaka University Journalists Association (DUJA) in a press release expressed deep concern and protested the comment of Lawyer Rokanuddin Mahmud. Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU), Jagannath University Journalists Association (JnU) and Barisal Division Journalists Association also protested in different messages. We demanded withdrawal the comment of Rokanuddin Mahmud. Some newspapers like Samakal and Nayadiganta published the press releases. The HC summoned seven journalists before it on Wednesday to explain their statement over Barrister Rokanuddin Mahmuds allegations in a contempt of court charge filed against Mizanur Rahman, joint editor of Bangla daily Prothom Alo. The HC at first summoned DRU president and general secretary to show cause as to why they should not be punished. But on Monday we heard that seven journalists have to go to court. I called many journalists to ensure the news. I also called Elias bhai and he told me that be ready to face court. I went to the court on Tuesday. I met many journalists in the office of Law Reporters Forum and stayed there till 3pm. Elias bhai told me to come to the court at 9am on Wednesday. DUJA arranged a Executive meeting in the night and the meeting took decision that the all the members of the organistion and campus reporters have to go to the court. As per of the decision we gathered at our office at 8:30am. DUJA GS Saddam Hossain and me went to HC at 9:20am. Our campus reporters were waiting on the National Press Club premises. It may be mentioned that this was the first charge from court or police station against me. We were determined that we never would apply for apology to dismiss our charge of contempt of court. We went to the court at 10:45am. Justice Naima Haider and Justice Zafar Ahmed were sitting in their own chair. Just after the hearing, some advocated hurled abusive words at the journalists who were accompanied us. They involved in quarrel. At one stage they hit each other. It was continued for 20 minutes. Justice Naima Haider left the chair. Our lawyer Shahdin Malik told us that you have to wait. We waited till 2pm. We also finished many official works. After 2pm, Shahdin Malik told us that you can go. But we did not know how the problem was solved. We went to Law Reporters Association and said good bye to all the journalists who helped us. We Shahed Chowdhury, Elias Khan, DRU Office Secretary Jamal bhai, DUJA GS, JnUJA president and GS and some others journalists went to DRU. We took tea there and came to office The New Nation. I saw that our national journalists leaders of all quarters gathered in a umbrella. It was hopeful for us. Thousands of journalists helped us and extend their cooperative hands to us. We never forget it. We are grateful to them. Thank you all. We vow that we will work to flourish the journalism sector. If the sector flourishes the whole countrys scenario will be changed. We are waiting for that.
