Content warning: transphobia. LEXIE CANNES STATE OF TRANS — Transgender students in Utah will need to have their genitals examined and approved prior to using a non-birth gender restroom if a new bill in the Utah state legislature becomes law. The sponsor of the legislation, state Rep. Michael Kennedy, who is also a medical doctor, also proposes redefining the word ‘gender’ for the Utah code in a way that does not favor trans people. For example, ‘one’s own “opinion” of what their gender is’ may not count for much, if anything at all. While I’m having a hard time figuring out all the details of Rep. Kennedy’s bill since it is, perhaps deliberately, clogged with medical terminology, but there’s no doubt as to what’s going on here — he’s proposing the state plays bathroom cop. A trans student’s identity depend on inspection, conformation, government approval and proper documentation. The legislation also appears to be a sort of end run around the possible arrival of a California-style trans student equality law. In short, Kennedy likely finds trans youths yukky and wants to legislate them into a box and kept monitored by the state. [Image: Photo head shot of Utah State Rep.
