Councillor Pat Knight Reports; Doncaster Markets have everything you need for the St Leger Festival Week. Visitors are being urged to visit Doncaster’s award winning markets during the St Leger Festival Week. The St Leger Stakes, the world’s oldest classic horse race, was conceived at the Red Lion pub in Doncaster Market place in 1776. Today the markets are the heart of the town centre and a key visitor attraction. Doncaster Live Music Festival, headlined by the Buzzcocks, takes place on the 7 and 8 September 2013 in the markets. Full market days will be held throughout the 10 day festival on Friday 6, Saturday 7, Tuesday 10, Friday 13 and Saturday 14 September. There will also be street dressing and entertainment including a ball pool for children in the markets. Councillor Bob Johnson, Cabinet Member for Tourism, said: “Doncaster Markets are the biggest and best in the North with some 400 shops, stalls and stands. Owned and operated by Doncaster Council, they have benefitted from significant investment and continue to be regenerated. We also have some fantastic community markets at Mexborough and Rossington offering superb quality and value to shoppers.”
