General Purpose Under supervision, Court Interpreters performs a wide variety of language interpretation activities on an assigned and as-needed basis for the Superior Court of California, County of Los Angeles and for persons doing business with the courts. Incumbents perform duties as an interpreter for courtroom and other legal proceedings, which may include, but are not limited to, arraignments, preliminary hearing, pre-trial conference and court trials. Examples of Essential Duties, Responsibilities, and Skills: The following examples are intended to describe the general nature and level of work performed by personnel assigned to this classification. Any one position in this class may not perform all the duties listed below, nor are the duties described intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties, responsibilities and skills required of personnel so classified. Interprets from and into English and the applicable non-English language using simultaneous, consecutive, and sight-translation modes; the meaning must be conveyed accurately, not editing, summarizing, adding meaning or omitting. Interprets for judges, attorneys, court staff, and other justice-related partners. Interprets court proceedings to non-English-speaking persons at the direction of Court management. Researches and understands terminology used in legal proceedings. Travels within the County. Accurately completes daily activity logs or other paperwork as required. Ability to correctly use English and non-English language grammar and vocabulary. Qualifications: Selection Requirements:Applicants must meet one of the following options: Option I: Certified as a Court Interpreter in a designated language by the Judicial Council of California. Option II: Registered as a Court Interpreter in a non-designated language by the Judicial Council of California. Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements: A valid California Class “C” driver’s license or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions. Examination Information: Part I: Qualifying evaluation of submitted application and certification requirement.
