Courtesy of Friends of Greyhound Adoption Program on Facebook Slip Track Usage & Exercise Guide Greyhounds can overheat very quickly and die, convulse or suffer acidosis so dont use a slip track once the mercury hits 20 plus degrees! If you cant walk on any surface barefoot because its too hot, then your greyhound cant either If you know or even think your greyhound might do some hard running, dont feed them beforehand and wait a good half hour after before giving them food. The risks otherwise could be a simple vomit or death inducing bloat... Whether your greyhound has a green collar or not, ALWAYS have a muzzle on hand/in the car just in case... you should be prepared for anything to happen when multiple greyhounds run/play off leash, even with those greyhounds who happily snooze together on the couch at home. Once the adrenaline is flowing, expect anything! Warm up your greyhound before free play time with a walk and / or muscle rub across the back and thighs to help minimise soreness or injury Before use, always check the track for faeces & debris and remove any offending items Before use, make sure the fence is intact and all gates are securely closed Know your greyhounds habits! Do they free gallop regularly and therefore have a good level of fitness or are they couch potatoes who only regularly go for a walk? Do they like to run with anything until pooped or lazy trotters who want to check out every weemail? This makes a difference on how, when and who you should let your dog off leash with.. Know your greyhounds natural walking & running gait! Injuries & soreness can often appear as a subtle favoring of a leg hours after a run or not shaking out properly. Take jugs of clean fresh water with you to the track as well as towels, buckets and bowls. Use the water to thoroughly wash your greyhounds feet, wrists and hocks after using the slip track to remove sand and any other nasties that might lurk in the public slip track sand before they get in the car. Give them water to drink. If it is on the warmer side or they have been running a bit, cool them down with the water over their backs, in their groins and on their bellies. Dry off with a towel. Check your greyhounds hydration levels by performing the skin pinch test. Grab some loose skin on their back and pull up. The skin should drop back into place straight away. If there is a delay in the skin returning to place your greyhound is de-hydrated. A good quality electrolyte solution like Recharge for Greyhounds mixed with water will help to get levels back to normal along with rest.
