Andersen will talk about the year 1900, with an emphasis on fun and celebrity. Fame is fleeting, and in a hundred years the entertainment landscape changes beyond recognition. Who were the Justin Biebers or Kim Kardashians at the turn of the Twentieth Century? What was entertainment like in a time without radio, television, the movies or CDs---not to mention the Internet. And because no life is without its serious moments, Andersen will also talk about medicine in the horse-and-buggy age. What was it like to get sick in 1900 in an era before antibiotics, x-rays or CT scans? Whether it’s a matter of good times or bad, sickness or health, Andersen will give us new insight into the vanished world of 1900. This program is funded with money from Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund and is co-sponsored by the Osher Lifelong Learning Center of the University of Minnesota.
