DAMU AL-JADID, THE HURDLE! Since 2006 when united Islamic courts emerged in south and central Somalia, the number of Islamist groups in Somalia had been prodigiously increasing, but when we look at the Somali history of leadership, the Islamist movements and even the scholars had no place at the top seats of the government and even any kind of leadership. Usually the major roles they used to play were to witness the marriage agreements and to lead the people in the prayers. Surprisingly, after the collapse of the Somali central government, many Islamic scholars return to the country with different attitude and ways of understanding about the religion. They established Al-ITIHAD movement which collapsed after many years of blood-shedding. Despite the fact of their military failure, but they succeeded socially after they gripped and seized all Somalia institutions management and they easily extended and started spreading their ideology within the youth and women who were vulnerable to them, and within less than two decades the Suffi religion sect authority was demolished and dominated against them. Those Islamist groups were active in any aspect of Somali community development, namely business, communication and even internal and external Somali politics. The breakdown of Islamic united courts in 2007 and the election of sheikh Sharif as Somalia president give them great opportunity and to solidify their feet on the Somalia political ground. In this Article, we can’t discuss and expose the roots of all those Islamist groups, but we specifically figure out one of the major groups MUSLIM BROTHERHOOD, which one of its branches is DAMU AL-JADID. Muslim brotherhood was established by the late Islamic scholar HASSAN AL-BANAA, may Allah grant him Janah, in the earliest of 19th century and the core principles of this group is to restore Islam empire through peaceful manner. This group went through many difficulties, but currently they are most influential group in Islamist groups and their representative in Somalia is called ISLAH group. This Islah group was divided in 2012 by disagreement of whether they should participate the Somali in presidential election or not, and Damu Jadid split them out as independent group from Islah. Subsequently, Damu jadid appointed their presidential aspirant for Hassan sheikh Mohamud and as Damu Jadid expected Hassan won that election, but he didn’t become independent president for his government. Damu Jadid kept interfering with the president governance and even forcing him to appoint the kind of premier, cabinet and who they need to be in a position in the government. After the president appointed his first prime-minister Abdi Farah Shirdoon Sacid and the premier unveiled his cabinet, the government experienced many failures and challenges from external and internal which resulted his removal from the office, many people reasoned the failures as the result of the Damu Al-jadid interference in the government policy and why the prime-minister was sacked because he was not member of Damu jadid and he didn’t follow their commands. After Sacid was sacked the president appointed new premier Abdiwali Sheikh Ahmed Mohamed, who the parliament gave confidence vote, but still he has problem to unveil his cabinet and that is why many people say there is disagreement between Dam Jadid and the premier. If the aristocratic rule continues ruling the country, I do believe the country will not move towards the development and reconstruction. So if we need national healing and reconciliation, we have to reunite the groups and seek central government without siding with any groups. God bless Somalia. By: Abdirahman Mohamed Harun.
