DESCRIPTION Antique 19th Century cased Chinese Export Solid Silver tea cup set, comprising of two tea cups, two saucers and two tea spoons, the cups richly parcel gilt, the double skinned bodies stunningly embossed and chased in relief with Chinese figures in a landscape emerging from a finely tooled ground, central shield engraved with a monogram repeating on saucers and spoons, the handles simulating wooden branches, the saucers engraved with fruiting vines, the spoons cast handles simulating bamboo branches. The set features very high craftmanship and reveals a perfect condition, it comes in the original fitted wooden box lined in blue silk and applied with brass handle. Each piece is Hallmarked Chinese Export silver (90 for 900+ standard), WANG HING mark (undoubtedly the most renowned and sought after Chinese luxury retailer active in Shanghai and Canton in the late 19th / early 20th Century. This particular version of the Wang Hing mark was believed to be used on the pieces made for the American luxury jeweller and retailer Tiffany & Co. Recent researches carried by the renowned scholar Adrien Von Ferscht have demonstrated that there is no tangible documentary evidence that Wang Hing ever produced for Tiffany & Co. It has been suggested that this particular mark belongs to the important maker Tai Kut, often producing for Wang Hing (for more information please follow this link).
