DID YOU KNOW: F.A. French and Sons came to the Latrobe area in 1938. It was located along Route 30 between the airport and the Youngstown cloverleaf. Frank Arthur French started the automatic screw machine company in 1909 in Pittsburgh. The determining factors for moving the plant the Latrobe area were the natural beauty of the area, lower power costs and lower taxes, as well as the proximity to industry located in Latrobe. Products of the company were shipped throughout the United States and Canada, but many of their most valued customers were located in this area in 1954: American Cyanamid and Chemical Company, American Locomotive, Kennametal, Keystone Alloys and Zappone Engineering. They manufactured a variety of parts machined from bar stock such as screws, bushings, studs, pins, bearings, and all made to the customers specifications. Franks son, George, retired from the company with 48 years service in 1983. Note: I did not find the date that they closed.
